Nissan and FedEx Express unveil new e-NV200 all-electric delivery van

Yesterday, Nissan and FedEx Express presented the result of their latest joint venture, the all-electric delivery van, e-NV200.

According to the automotive manufacturer, the e-NV200 features a new telematics system,  benefits from smooth acceleration, new power outlets and has enough space to transport cargo in its compact body. 

“As a global fleet operator, FedEx Express is always looking measures to improve the efficiency of its vehicles. (…) We are delighted to collaborate with a global player like Nissan in the development of an urban all-electric delivery van”, said Russell Musgrove, MD of Global Vehicles at FedEx Express.

Nissan to reduce carbon emissions

When developing e-NV200 Nissan primarily focussed on finding a mobility solution for entrepreneurs whilst also featuring components to help save energy and reduce carbon emissions. Tests began back in December 2011 in order to see if the 100% electric vehicle could perform in real-life situations. 

Hideto Murakami, corporate vice president, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd, promised, “the eNV-200 [would] offer all the spaciousness, versatility and practicality of a traditional diesel or gas-powered compact van, but with zero CO2 or other pollutant emissions at the point of use. What’s more, it will provide an outstanding driving experience that is unique to EVs.”

All-electric parcel delivery vans for FedEx Express

By currently operating 130 all-electric vehicles worldwide and more to come in the near future, the courier company, FedEx Express, hopes to decrease its carbon footprint. According to FedEx Express, 80% of its overall goal of increasing the global fleet’s carbon emissions by 20% by 2020 had already been achieved.

Nissan and FedEx have been testing their e-NV200 in London as well as on the roads of Japan and are hoping to expand to Singapore, USA and Brazil by 2013.

UPS delivers 400 tons of broadcasting equipment to Olympics media centre

The Olympics official logistics partner, UPS, has made its final delivery of media equipment to the International Broadcast Centre (IBC). The venue near the Olympic Park is going to be a 24-hour home to 21,000 accredited journalists, photographers and camera crews from all over the world.

UPS courier services delivered a total of 400 tons of television broadcasting equipment to the IBC. That includes 60,000 pieces of equipment and cables with a joined length of 560,000 metres. Thanks to the carrier, television, radio and internet broadcasters stationed at the IBC will be now able to communicate with an audience of over 4.8 billion people over the entire duration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

UPS also reported that a high street with merchandise shops, cafés and dry cleaning services was built only for the media but will be converted for future retail purposes after end of the Games.

DPD Action Plan for Olympic Games 2012

Today, the courier service, DPD, announced its action plan for the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2012 in London. 

Its Olympics Project Team has developed a detailed plan responding to the increase demand of parcel deliveries during the Olympic Games as well as to the possibly large scale of congestion.

 

The DPD action plan is aimed at ensuring on-time deliveries / collections throughout this summer and looks as follows:

• additional facility to open near London Bridge DPD depot
• increased number of routes in operation
• assistants hired to support DPD drivers with on-foot parcel deliveries
• early AM as well as late PM deliveries to be scheduled
• increased number of customer service / hotline staff
• coordination of events to carried out by DPD Olympic Specialist
• daily updates for London

Increase in UK's International Market Growth & Parcel Volumes thanks to E-Commerce

As stated by the Royal Mail's MD, Nick Landon, the UK e-commerce industry has seen record-breaking sales this Christmas. Not only have Brits sent parcels nationwide but international parcel deliveries have increased rapidly, especially during this week. 

The Royal Mail reported figures of over 600,000 parcels and packages being processed at its Worldwide Distribution Centre at London's Heathrow airport. The parcel volumes are currently twice as high as normal. 

Moreover, people have been particularly keen on importing and exporting goods to Australia with a large majority being purchased via e-commerce websites. Down Under's growth market saw an increase of approximately 31% in November this year followed by Greece (21%), Finland (20%) and the Netherlands (20%). 

These figures suggest that the eurozone crisis may not have affected the UK's international markets as much as we thought it would.
