FedEx to open gateway facility in Copenhagen in late 2015

FedEx Express has revealed its completion of the external structure on a new gateway facility situated at Copenhagen Airport, Denmark. The new build, worth 4 million Euros, measures at 8,000 square metres, with its opening date due at the end of 2015.

With the external building complete, the US company is next due to install "state-of-the-art" automated sorting systems, which have the ability to process up to 11,500 packages on a daily basis. Approximately 120 staff will be employed at the new facility.

The new facility is expected to use energy recovery technology on its conveyor belts which will capture energy from its movement and convert this into usable electricity.

Vice President for Finance, Europe, at FedEx Express, Helena Jansson, has said development so far has been "right on track." Jansson added: "It means we will be ready to help our customers in Denmark and Sweden boost their cross-border business during the busy peak season at the end of this year."

FedEx has recently been working alongside Danish social enterprise, Incita, to test the new facility's equipment. Christina Grontved, CEO of Incita, has said: "We are excited to play a role in testing the new FedEx Express facility. Fifteen employees at Incita are involved in producing 5,000 packages in all shapes and sizes in our workshop,, which will be used to test the new sorting system at the facility." She continued: "We hope that this project will help some of our employees re-build their confidence so that they can move on to new opportunities."

Post Danmark teams up with major Danish retailer Coop to expand national parcel delivery service

Post Danmark, the designated Danish postal operator, has entered into a partnership with Denmarks’s leading retail chain Coop in order to enhance its parcel delivery network. The postal company aims to install 300 automated package locker terminals in Coop stores across country by the end on October 2013, and e-shoppers will be able to be pick up their parcels from these newly created hubs.

Partnerships between postal or courier services and retail outlets are not uncommon (FedEx recently announced its partnership with Bangalore-based printing chain Printo in a move to develop its Indian network)  but this is the first collaboration of its kind in Denmark.

Representatives from both parties recognise the opportunities for both companies. Sales Director of Post Danmark Anders Mittage said, “The agreement strengthens our position in the parcels market by offering the most distribution points and the most flexible options for customers.” He also mentioned that Coop’s long opening hours will be of especial convenience to customers, who will consequently be able to pick up their parcel outside of normal delivery hours.

Michael Leo, chain director for SuperBrusgen and Coop, commented, “We want to be the local hub, and so we are delighted to offer this additional service.”

Denmark’s EU Presidency GOGREEN with DHL

The international logistics and parcel services provider, DHL, is going to become the official partner of Denmark’s EU presidency supplying all ministers with GOGREEN services and sustainable products.

As part of its initiative “Sustainable Products and CleanTech solutions”, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs was looking for a partner who could

• firstly,  help it reduce any environmental impacts cause by meeting activities
• and secondly, support its socio-economic engagement.

By joining forces with the parcel delivery service, DHL, and using not only GOGREEN, DHL Express but also DHL Freight services, the Danish government also hopes to implement the ISO20121 standard.

Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL, described the partnership as a “great honour for [DHL] to provide environmentally friendly services to the Danish Ministries. [DHL would be] convinced that [their] GOGREEN products are a perfect match to support the presidency to reach their sustainability goals.”
