UPS prepare for busy week in the US

UPS has said it is expecting its parcel volumes to soar next week as consumers start to return Christmas gifts to retailers. The US parcel delivery giant has said January 6th is to be the busiest, with it being labelled “UPS National Returns Day.” The carrier is expecting more than 800,000 packages to be shipped on the day. By the end of the first full week in January, UPS is anticipating the transport of 4 million return packages and parcels in the USA alone.
UPS Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, Alan Gershenhorn, has said: “As e-commerce continues to grow, simple returns services have become an essential part of the overall consumer shopping experience with 66% reviewing a retailer’s return policy before making a purchase, and 68% said they would complete an online purchase if the retailer simply offered a free return shipping label.”

In a bid to keep its customers informed, UPS has recently updated its website and mobile app to help those looking to return items to find a convenient drop-off location. The firm has recently expanded its network by introducing 400 new UPS Access Points across the US.

UPS to expand its Canadian network

UPS has announced its plans to expand its Canadian network by opening three new operation centres within British Colombia. The operation centres are due to be located in Kamloops, Nanaimo and Comox, with the additional expansion of the already existing centre in Kelowna.

Pick up and delivery services for UPS customers in Kamloops have already begun, with this replacing its current agent being used. The scheduled expansion will further enhance UPS's already strong Canadian network, whilst also increasing the brand's reputation further into BC.
Michael Tierney, UPS Canada President, has said: "Expanding our service in BC and across Canada is fueled by market opportunity and customer demand. UPS continues to invest in new capabilities and network capacity to secure customers' confidence and enable their long-term growth."

The expansion is expected to be complete by November of this year, with it representing a multi-million dollar investment. UPS will see its physical presence expand by 36,000 square feet across the four new centres, with approximately 80 jobs being introduced.

UPS releases fourth quarter results

UPS, the American international parcel delivery company, published its fourth quarter results yesterday.

The company announced earlier in the month that diluted earnings per share for the quarter would be lower than initially anticipated, owing to bad weather and the need to take on an increased number of personnel due to unprecedented order volumes in the run up to Christmas. In spite of this, 2013 results generally compared favourably with the previous year and UPS have promised even better for 2014.

Revenue for the US domestic package, the largest branch of the company, rose 4.2% to $8.9 billion. The international package climbed 5.3% year-on-year from $3.2 to $3.37 billion while revenue from the Supply Chain & Freight division dropped 5.8%.

Consolidated revenue for the quarter amounted to almost $15 million, an overall 2.8% increase from 2012's $14.57 billion Q4 turnover.

The fourth quarter's performance provided a good end for the US courier - revenue increased 2.4% to over $55 billion and total operating profit rose to $7,034 billion compared to $1,343 billion in 2012.

Kurt Kuehn, UPS Chief Financial Officer, said, "While the year ended on a challenging note, we are confident in our ability to adapt and we expect much better results in 2014. UPS expects balanced profitability growth across all segments in a slightly better economic environment, resulting in full-year guidance of diluted earnings per share of $5.05 to $5.30, an 11%-to-16% increase over our 2013 adjusted results."

DHL, UPS and TNT release third quarter results

The biggest door-to-door couriers have recently published their financial results for the third quarter. Highlights include: Deutsche Post DHL saw a 2.5% year-on-year fall in revenue but a 5.8% rise in profit and basic earnings per share; UPS increased revenue by 3.4% and package volume by 4.6% and TNT Express continues to see falls in its revenues and operating profit but gives positive reports of the progress of its Deliver!  improvement strategy.
UPS saw an impressive 3.4% increase in revenue and 4.6%
increase in package volume in the third quarter of 2013
DHL's strongest divisions were Mail and Express, which saw respective rises in operating profit of 6.1% and a massive 13.9%. Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL said the successful performance overall was owing to the company's "highly qualified, dedicated workforce.. excellent market position in global growth markets and ... unique global network."

UPS' strong Q3 performance was owing largely to the US domestic market, which saw significant increases in both revenue and profit. The International parcel delivery division saw revenue increase by 2.5% to $3 billion and daily package volume increase by 6.5%. Profits for the division nevertheless fell by $32 million year-on-year, which UPS said was due to a $75 million negative impact from currency and fuel.

TNT reported that the Americas and Europe Other performed well in the third quarter while Europe Main and Pacific regions experienced problems due to yield pressure and decline in weight per consignment. Overall, revenues fell by 6.6% to EUR 1.6 billion and adjusted operating income plunged 15.6% year-on-year. Commenting on the developments of the quarter, CEO Tex Gunning said "While some segments are showing better performance, overall trading conditions remain demanding and visibility limited. Our ultimate goal is to make TNT Express robust for the long term. We are therefore developing further initiatives to reinforce our market and operational positions.

Two pilots die in UPS cargo plane crash in Birmingham, Alabama

A UPS A330 plane crashed early hours of Wednesday morning while approaching Birmingham International Airport in Alabama, USA. The pilot and the co-pilot - the only people on board - were killed in the crash. The plane is thought to have caught fire before the crash-landing in a field near Birmingham Shuttleworth International Airport. William Bell, Mayor of Birmingham reported there had been two to three small explosions on the aircraft that were likely to have been caused by aviation fuel.

Our efforts are now primarily focussed on helping their families" said UPS Chairman and CEO Scott Davis.

UPS reduces greenhouse gas emissions

UPS published its 2012 Corporate Sustainability report on July 25th, announcing a reduction of total greenhouse gas emissions for the year, in spite of an overall increase in parcel volumes. The company pointed to its investments in alternative fuel vehicles, retooled routes and air fuel savings as reasons for this success.
Hydraulic Hybrid
UPS Hydraulic Hybrid Vehicle
Highlights from the year included: a 2.1% year-on-year reduction in absolute greenhouse gas emissions from operations and purchased energy, $2.6 million charitable donations and humanitarian relief efforts in 35 countries, and a Global Forestry Initiative which aims to have planted over 1 million trees by the end of the year.

As well as promoting details of UPS' recent performance UPS Chief Operating Officer David Abney reported that the company has also set a new alternative fuel goal: "By 2017, the company will reach one billion miles driven by alternative fuel/ advanced technology vehicles - more than double the previous 400 million goal," he said.

The in-depth nature of the report is testimony to how corporate social responsibility has taken on a massive significance in recent years. UPS' main competitors, FedEx and DHL, similarly produce reports charting their environmental and social performance, so much so that many commentators assert that social responsibility indicators will  be treated as important as economic performance when assessing a company's viability.

Then you qualify for our document rates!

Transit times: how long will my parcel take to arrive?

Whether you're sending a parcel, a document or freight, the time it will take for your shipment to arrive at its designated destination will be of great importance to you. Even for shipments that are not vitally time-sensitive, it's important to have an estimated delivery date, so that you can plan ahead. Courier services can be hesitant to guarantee exact delivery times, but at Transglobal Express, we try to give you as much information as possible about transit times to make your shipping experience as pleasant and stress free as we can.

Choosing Transglobal Express for your parcel delivery service affords you a great amount of flexibility: not only do we offer services from all of the biggest global couriers UPS, FedEx, DHL and TNT, we also offer multiple service options from each of these brands, depending on the time sensitivity of your shipment and your personal budget.

For time sensitive shipments, an express service is recommended. With UPS Express Saver or DHL Express Worldwide, you can expect next business day delivery from the UK to most European countries and transit times as little as 2 days to many locations in the USA. Express delivery to Australia can be as little as 3 days, and the same goes for many Asian countries.

If your shipment is less time-sensitive, for intra-European deliveries, you can opt for a more economical road-based service. Depending on your chosen destination, deliveries to European countries will take 1-5 business days with DHL Economy Select. For worldwide deliveries, TG International Economy is a great option. With service, your parcels are delivered through the FedEx network and could be anywhere in the world within a week. Services such as these are less expensive and are a great option if you are working to a tighter budget.

If you know your full collection and delivery address, you can calculate a more accurate transit time estimate via the tools available on our website:

FedEx competition indicates increasing importance of social media and sustainability to major carriers

FedEx's launched its "Grow a Greener School Contest" on Pinterest yesterday, highlighting the growing importance of social media as well as sustainability within the industry. The competition aims to give teachers, students and parents the resources to create hands-on sustainability projects at their school. Any school in the United States can enter by submitting an on-line form and attaching a photograph, which FedEx will subsequently post on Pinterest, the photo-sharing social media website.

Entries can be submitted until midday (CDT) on May 24th and then a week of public voting for the best projects via "liking" on Pinterest will determine the winners. There are prizes of $3,000, $2,000 or $1,000 prizes for the winning schools' green initiatives.

FedEx's competition comes at a time when both sustainability and social media seem to be high on the agenda for other major carriers including UPS and DHL. UPS have recently announced adjustments to their Boeing 767 aircraft which, as well as cutting fuel costs, will decrease carbon emissions by an estimated 62,000 metric tonnes per annum. DHL  released their 2012 corporate responsibility at the beginning of the month in which sustainability was one of their primary focuses.

In addition, both carriers have a large and growing presence on social media. DHL have almost 100,000 likes on Facebook while UPS have a still impressive 35,000. TNT Express also has 25,000 likes. FedEx are leading the way, however, with an amazing 650,000! Using social media platforms allows carriers to engage with customers and clients in new and innovative ways and to take advantage of viral marketing opportunities. Carriers regularly post interesting photographs, puzzles or updates on their latest sustainability projects. Often they advertise special offers which are only available on Facebook or other platforms.

Given FedEx's competition, it seems they are keen to build their Pinterest presence next. On this platform too, they are leading the way: they have 1600 likes compared to DHLs 79 and UPS's 51 and, at the time of writing TNT Express are yet to establish a Pinterest account.

Addition of new winglets to 767 aircraft to save UPS 6m gallons of fuel and reduce carbon emissions by 62,000 metric tonnes per annum

Improvements to UPS flagship 767 aircraft are expected to reduce operating costs and improve sustainability, the American courier announced last week. All 54 of its 767 aircraft fleet, as well as five additional aircraft on order, will benefit from new winglets by the end of 2014.

File:UPS 767.jpg

The winglets are arrow-shaped surfaces to be attached to the tip of each wing, which reduce drag and lower noise emissions by enhancing take-off performance. UPS estimates a four per cent fuel savings on each 767 flight, amounting to 6m gallons of fuel a year and 62,000 less metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
David Abney, UPS chief operating officer, commented,  “We are constantly looking for ways to reduce emissions, and drive down operating costs so our customers have the solutions they need to compete in a global economy. These winglets are a perfect example of sustainability in action. They are good business and good stewardship."
Winglets are already installed on UPS's 747, and MD-11 fleets, and the A300-600 has a similar device called a wingtip fence.
Each winglet is 11 feet tall, will add approximately five and a half feet of span to each wing and around 1300 kilograms in weight. Even at the increased size and weight, the winglets will still reduce the amount of fuel used per flight, due to greatly improved aerodynamics
UPS aims to reduce its carbon intensity by an additional 20 percent by 2020, measured against a 2005 baseline. UPS Airlines President Mitch Nichols said, “We believe there is always some way you can improve, and we're applying that spirit to our environmental efforts. This is a great example of how we can use existing technology to save money, lessen our impact on the environment and serve our customers more efficiently."
Sustainability and corporate responsibility seem top priority for all of the major carriers. DHL recently published its 2012 corporate responsibility report, in which its comparable intention to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2020, based on a 2007 baseline, is reiterated.

TNT Express blames UPS for failure of takeover bid

At TNT Express’s AGM on Wednesday, Chairman Antony Burgmans agreed that UPS’s failure to understand the culture of the European Commission was the reason for the collapse of the American logistics giant’s €5.2bn bid to take over TNT.

Image c/o TNT Express

The EC formally vetoed the merger at the end of January 2013, though UPS has pulled out two weeks earlier when it became apparent that the Commission would not allow the deal to go ahead, citing concerns about threats to competition in EU markets.

Speaking of lessons learnt during the attempted merger, Burgmans stated,  “Whenever you’re dealing with Brussels, you must make sure that you’ve done your homework very carefully.” He stated that throughout the process, UPS seemed confident of obtaining regulatory approval from the EC and were not sufficiently humble in the face of the European Regulatory Bodies.

The chairman went on to say ““Brussels has a totally different culture than in Washington. UPS was fully in charge of everything. From this side of the table we did everything we could to give all the information about the Brussels culture”.

UPS is yet to comment on the TNT Express Chairman’s statements

UPS launches appeal against EC ban on TNT takeover

UPS have announced their intention to appeal the European Commission’s decision to block their €5.2 billion merger with Dutch competitor TNT Express.

File:UPS Airlines (N288UP) McDonnell Douglas MD-11F climbs just after taking off at Sydney Airport.jpg

The appeal does not indicate the US courier company’s intention to renew or reconsider its offer. Rather, UPS are seeking to clarify the circumstances surrounding the veto of the merger so as to ensure possibilities for future expansion.

UPS Spokesperson Peggy Gardener said: "We are challenging the decision in order to ensure a more accurate assessment of the EU competitive landscape and that no precedent is established by the EC that would limit international growth opportunities."

UPS abandoned their bid to take over TNT in January 2013 when it became apparent that the EC intended to prohibit the merger on the grounds that it would restrict competition in the EU and may result in price increases. Gardner described the EC’s decision as “factually and legally erroneous”.

TNT’s stock plummeted after the withdrawal of UPS bid in January but has shown signs of recovery since then. For its part, the Dutch company is implementing a recently announced updated strategy and profit improvement plan.

UPS and STATS LLC launch data driven performance index for NCAA Basketball

Today, UPS, one of the world’s leading international courier companies, announced that it had teamed up with STATS LLC in an effort to expand its Team Performance Index (TPI) used to measure NCAA men’s and women’s basketball.

“UPS is thrilled to extend our association with STATS to include the new Team Performance Indexes for men’s women’s college basketball. Logistics are not only the foundation of our business, but they’re also the foundation for success on the court or on any playing field, and we’re proud to have developed a system that successfully quantifies which teams are best at the preparation, planning and precision that lead to success”, said Ron Rogowski, vice president at UPS global sponsorships and events.

The UPS TPI will comprise the following six correlated key statistical components:
  • Offensive Measure – effective field goal percentage
  • Defensive Measure – effective field goal against
  • Rebounding – rebounding percentage amongst all rebounds in a game
  • Ball handling – assists/game, steals/game etc.
  • Overall miscues measure – turnovers/game, fouls/game etc.
  • And the success measure – winning percentage.

Moreover, the courier’s new index will be updated on a regular basis with leaders of each division announced each week.

“STATS is excited to expand the UPS Team Performance Index into college basketball. The application of the Index to basketball highlights the efficiency and overall teamwork required to succeed in the sport. The Team Performance Index is designed to identify well-balanced teams that do multiple things well, similar to how UPS excels in logistics. The formula shows new insights and tells a unique story about the teams and the college basketball season”, explained John Sasman, vice president of commercial products at STATS.

With the help of a proprietary algorithm an index value will be put in place for each component with an average of 100 and a value of 200 as the maximum.

STATS is the world’s largest sports technology, data and content company.

A Guide to Sending Christmas Parcels

The Christmas Parcel rush has begun. But what if you are struggling to find a courier service which will deliver it on time?
sending christmas parcels, christmas parcel rush, send parcels for christmas

Home pick-ups and online bookings

Booking your parcel collection online makes life much easier, especially during the Christmas period. Not only does it offer a convenient, time-saving alternative to your local post office, but you will also pay less.

Many independent re-sellers or courier agents in the UK resell the rates and services of big carriers such as DHL, UPS or TNT. In exchange, for high shipping volumes, the re-sellers receive discounts of up to 70% which they then forward to their customers.

Christmas collection and delivery times

Just like anyone else, courier companies also temporarily close their operations over Christmas. For this reason, you should make sure to check the Collection and Delivery Times Schedules of DHL, UPS and TNT.

Sending large or bulky Christmas presents

If you opt in for a larger present which may weigh a little bit more, or is particularly bulky in size, there are several services which may make a good fit.

Standard services are usually restricted to 70kg per consignment. If you want to avoid surcharges, sending your parcels by air or sea freight is often a better solution.

Air freight services come in particularly handy if speed of delivery is your priority. You can get an instant, free quote for air and sea freight services on TransglobalExpress.co.uk/Air-Freight.

Express, domestic and international deliveries

Whether you would like to sent a parcel from London to Edinburgh, or all the way to New York City, express courier services will get it there via the quickest way possible.

You should always bare in mind that these services may cost more than their standard mail equivalents.

When unloading courier vehicles or giant freighters, your parcels will be given priority. Many courier companies offer a range of Express Services for domestic and international deliveries.

Packaging your parcels

Did you know that it is not enough to wrap your Christmas parcels and send them in the post? Sufficient packaging is vital if you want to avoid damages to your presents. For tips about how to best package your parcel, check out this Packaging Guide.

Information about Hazardous, Prohibited and Owner’s Risk Goods can be found on TransglobalPremium.co.uk/Prohibited-Items.

Send gifts to India this Christmas

Sending a gift to a friend or family member in India can be conveniently done from your home. All you need is an internet connection, a printer and access to a UK courier website such as TransglobalPremium.co.uk.

Image c/o Lonleyplanet.com

Quick bookings

Once you have registered an account with your chosen courier company, you will be able to arrange a collection online. All you need to do is to:

  • Provide a collection and delivery address
  • Select a collection time
  • Fill in the packing list
  • Add an insurance premium if required
  • Pay for the outstanding amount
  • And print out your shipping labels.

Speedy deliveries to India

Following the collection of your parcel on your chosen collection date, it will be dropped off at a local or regional depot before being transported to its destination country via road and/or air.

Your gifts should arrive in India just in time for Christmas (subject to transit times and customs). For urgent deliveries, book an express courier service such as UPS or DHL Express who can deliver your parcel within 2 to 3 working days*.

Image c/o Microsoft

Save on carriage costs this Christmas

You may find that some carriers offer cheaper parcel services with longer transit times. When quoting you your courier company should ideally list various carriers and their services who you can then compare with each other.

International courier companies such as TNT offer cost-effective alternatives such as the TNT Economy Express which will deliver your gifts within 7 working days*.

Packaging your gifts

India is located 4766.68 miles off the UK mainland. To ensure the safe arrival of your gifts after such a long journey, it is important to pay special attention to your packaging. Remember to watch out for
  • Fragile items – Wrapping them in bubble wrap, extra cardboard  or custom packaging will decrease the risk of damage during transit.
  • Sturdy & stable packaging – If you wish to send your gift wrapped up on paper, place them in an additional cardboard box. Normal wrapping paper does not offer sufficient packaging for your parcel.
  • For detailed packaging advice, visit TransglobalPremium.co.uk/Packaging
